The last month has been a bear with a couple different deadlines right on top of each other, so I haven't had as much time to work on BM. That will change in about two weeks when I get a sweet three week window to crank out some art for this here graphic novel.

I'll be back, with some art.

Creating a Page

Here's a peak at how I put together a page for Blessed Machine.

My first step (which is not shown here) is to make a rough drawing of the page. Usually this drawing is very tiny (called a thumbnail), but for this page I roughed it out full size. This is the stage where all of the hard work is done. I choose panel size and arrangement (based on the script by Pete Ruttman), as well as figure placement and readability.

Next I take my full sized rough and transfer it to a clean piece of 11x17 bristol board. I use a light box and trace my under drawing onto the new board using a non-repro blue pencil, just like animators use. This way I don't have to erase any of my under drawing after I'm done inking (the blue doesn't show up when scanned in, hence non-repro). I then start inking.

I start with all of the characters. This is just a habit of mine. I ink them using a Micron pigment pen size 1. It's a larger felt tip marker that can be used somewhat like a brush. I like thick, bold lines and this marker works perfectly for that.

I then move onto the backgrounds. I switch back-and-forth between the Micron #1 for large elements, and my smaller Faber-Castell ink pen-size S, for details.

After all that is done, it's just a matter of filling in blacks and making any corrections either myself or Pete think need correcting. In this case, I re-inked Tiberius' face in panel one.

That's it. My ever-changing process for making a page.

Hey everyone, series artist Kurt Wood here. Just wanted to say thanks for stopping by the new home for all art related to Blessed Machine.

“But Kurt, you already have your own art blog…why the need for separate sites?”

Excellent question! There really is no need for it; I just thought it would be fun to have all of my Blessed Machine art in one place. This way, any time I post a rough sketch or a finished page, you the reader (all 3 of you) can find it without the hassle of looking through my commission work and doodles. Although I strongly urge you to still check out my other site for non-Blessed Machine stuff ;)

I’m gonna try to keep to weekly postings, probably on Mondays or Tuesdays.

I love the creative process of making comics, and hope you do, too. Follow me on this fun little adventure…if you dare!
